Reading Response #7: Pg 104-115
The reading this week showed me about the conceptualism and
self-exploration is the key talking point. The making of self- exploration was
actually really creepy to me based on how far an artist would go in order to
sell the narrative. Chris Burden’s
pieces are a great example of what I am talking about, when it comes to how
shocking and how far he was willing to push the envelope. Shoot is one of those films, where I really don’t want to see a man
shoot a bullet into his own arm, but that is what Burden wanted to do. Become a
shock factor to the audience, which in turn, would get a conversation started.
His other piece Through the Night Softly,
is even harder to watch, since it involves glass. and him shirtless on a
floor. I don’t know, but that doesn’t sound like a good time. There are opposite
approaches to how self-exploration, which is better than going around hurting yourself.
William Wegman used his dogs to illustrate juxtaposition, putting them in certain
positions to tell a story. Again, better than pain. I also, loved the project
that Gary Hill, Electrical Linguistics
used when trying to have visuals to represent electronic sounds. Having lines
and curves to generate shapes. He did this so “He sees the image as a language
that he is continuously re-inventing through the Medium of video art”. These
all were being used under a video platform, which in itself is a massive tool
that was on the come up.
