Reading Respone #6: Pg 82-103
Something that was brought up in the readings, was around
the time that technology was becoming more available for the public,
Televisions were becoming the next big wave of technology. To have a machine
that was going to give you access to more variety of visual entertainment was
to be a massive business. By the 1960s, 90% of the US households were owners of
TV’s. Something that also brought the with TV, was the viewpoints. Viewpoints
from other people from different parts of the country, and even in the world.
Worldly viewpoints were being more and more introduced. Different viewpoints,
different languages, customs. Televised corporations
became something of the normality and became more of an influence in technology
to come. Marshall Mcluhan wrote in his
book The Medium Is the Message: An
Inventory of Effects, “anyone of our new media, is in a sense a new
language, a new codification of experience collectively achieved by new works
habits and inclusive collective awareness.” (Pg. 84) Technology had made its
own code, its own understanding. Where artist fall into this conversation is where
they were very concerned for the industry. They felt TVs were going to change
the industry, that they were felt TV was actually going to be an enemy. In the
eyes of the state, TV was going to be political wave and make its mark, through advertising. Everything with one move, was going to be changed and revolutionized. the fear most people had about TV's, to this day, could have been true, and for the most part, were true in some aspects. But overall, what it did was introduce the Visual entertainment, more than anything else.
Josiah,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement about how televisions were mainly developed to introduce the visual entertainment, stated within the text. However, in my prospective, I believe that televisions were developed to make viewers understand the different views from a world-wide view. Meaning to understand what is going on outside of their household.

Hi Josiah!
ReplyDeleteI really like how you point out the importance of different viewpoints being introduced through the developed use of TV. Along with that, I agree that some artists were concerned about the art industry and the usage of TV, but some also embraced it as well, which was a turning point for art. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Josiah,
ReplyDeleteI agree televison has turned to broadcasting more entertaining material but it had also open viewers eyes to the world around us. Today, we can turned on the news and know what is going on around the world within minutes when back then people only knew things about their family, town or maybe nearby towns. News of far away were mainly rumors. So the invention of video and the television was truly revolutionary.
