Response #5: Pg 58-81
From the concept in this week’s reading, the use of filmography
is a very interesting. Video Art as one would call it is a very cool idea that
many people don’t necessarily how to use. But when used and done right, then it
becomes a thing of true beauty. Especially when it comes down to the artistic
talent and eye required. One of the main points shown in the reading in
general, is the work that is done under the minimalistic and conceptual trends
in video art. The ideology behind the simplistic approach that many creators
back then, as well as today, is to make their narrative be able something
simple, but can vary in complexity. One of the well-known artists that do these
types of works, is by Robert Ashley, which made his “experimental Opera” which
included “sounds of spoken text, projected video images of abstract images, appropriate
images, and words”. the way many artists today, try to over complicate things
by over the tops scenes, don’t necessarily have a greater impact in the field,
as someone who could fall back onto a simpler and straight to the point, type
of work. These types of works, combined with the actions of videographers, make
an interesting combination. You get to sense some type of emotion, some more
vivid than others. Lepage had said,” the theater is linked to technology; There
is a poetry in technology, but we try to use it in a way that does not eclipse
the action on stage”. This is to say that technology and stage work, will work
hand in hand, as is develops.
I find it vastly fascinating to read about artist who use various other techniques, such as Robert Ashley, who was an American composer. And he is best known for his operas and other theatrical works, many of which incorporate electronics and extended techniques. And some of the techniques discussed does not have to be complex in anyway to be considered art. He wanted to maintain a very simplistic view.
